Everything LingoKeep ships that someone else wrote, and the terms it travels under.
# Third-party notices
LingoKeep ships other people's work in three places — the Chrome extension's
zip, the JavaScript `lingokeep.com` sends to a visitor's browser, and the
dictionary definitions the API returns. This file is the **single source of
truth** for what that work is and under which licence it travels; the extension
build copies this exact file into every production artifact
(`apps/extension/scripts/copy-notices.mjs`), and `/licenses` on the site renders
it verbatim.
Nothing here is optional politeness. Every licence involved — MIT, ISC, Apache
2.0, the SIL Open Font License and CC BY-SA 4.0 — makes passing the notice on a
*condition* of redistribution, and this repo distributes to three audiences at
once: a store zip, a public website, and an API that hands out dictionary text.
§6 carries the licence texts that aren't quoted inline.
The test for inclusion is **"do these bytes leave our machines"**, not "is there
a zip". §5 lists what that test deliberately excludes.

## 1. Dictionary data
This is the largest body of other people's work in the product, and the only
part of it a user reads directly. Every gloss `/api/dict/lookup` returns, every
definition on a saved card, and every entry in a video's word list comes from
one of the three sources below. A card is a **snapshot** of that text, so it
travels onward again — into the user's deck, their Anki export, and their own
device. All three sources are share-alike; all three require attribution.
The ingestion scripts and the exact download URLs live in
`apps/home/scripts/ingest/README.md`. None of the source data is committed to
this repo.
### 1.1 Japanese — JMdict

Japanese headwords, readings, kanji/kana form variants, part-of-speech tags,
English glosses and the `freq_rank` ordering all come from **JMdict**, property
of the **Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG)**, and are
used in conformance with the Group's licence. Loaded by
`apps/home/scripts/ingest/jmdict.mjs`.
Japanese is the one language whose frequency ranking is *not* corpus-derived:
it comes from JMdict's own `ke_pri`/`re_pri` priority tags, so §1.3 does not
apply to it.
EDRDG asks that the acknowledgement be visible to users of a service built on
the files, not buried in a repository — which is why `/licenses` is a public
page and this section is first.
### 1.2 Spanish, French, German — Wiktionary via kaikki.org

Entries, senses, glosses and inflected forms for the three whitespace-delimited
languages are extracted from **English Wiktionary** by **Tatu Ylonen's
wiktextract**, published as machine-readable JSONL at kaikki.org, and loaded by
`apps/home/scripts/ingest/kaikki.mjs`. The text is Wiktionary's contributors';
the extraction is Ylonen's.

### 1.3 Frequency ranking — FrequencyWords

The `freq_rank` column for Spanish, French and German is Hermit Dave's
**FrequencyWords** 50k lists, derived from the OpenSubtitles corpus, loaded by
`apps/home/scripts/ingest/freq.mjs`. It does more than order results: `MINE_LEVELS`
reads this number to decide which words a learner is assumed to already know, so
it shapes what the word list shows.
Japanese ranks come from JMdict instead (§1.1) — `freq.mjs` refuses any language
declaring a segmenter.
### 1.4 Japanese segmentation — kuromoji

`kuromoji` tokenizes Japanese subtitle lines so a click can land on a word. It
runs **server-side only** and its dictionary ships inside a private container
image, so no kuromoji bytes reach a user. It is listed here because its output —
the token boundaries and readings — is what the dictionary lookup is keyed on,
and because naming it costs nothing.

## 2. Fonts

Three families set the entire product, and **both** surfaces serve the binaries
from our own origin rather than linking Google's CDN — so both redistribute
them and owe the notice here:
- the **extension** bundles five subsetted `woff2` files in
`apps/extension/assets/fonts/`, which Plasmo compiles into the zip;
- the **site** loads them through Next's `next/font/google`, which downloads the
files **at build time** and serves them from `lingokeep.com`.

## 3. Icons — Lucide
**ISC**, with the Feather-derived subset under **MIT** (both texts in §6.2) ·

Both surfaces draw the same glyphs, by two different routes:
- **the site** imports the `lucide-react` package;
- **the extension** ships lucide's own 24×24 node lists copied into
`apps/extension/src/components/icon-nodes.jsx`, because the content script
cannot afford the package. Copied source is still redistribution, and the
header of that file names its origin and version.

## 4. Runtime dependencies we redistribute
Two bundles reach other people's machines — the extension zip, and the
JavaScript the site sends to a visitor's browser — so both are redistribution
and both belong here.
### 4.1 Compiled into the extension zip
Everything in `apps/extension`'s `dependencies` is compiled into the package
uploaded to the Chrome Web Store. All **MIT** except where marked; the MIT text
is in §6.1 and only the copyright lines differ.

`@jun/lingokeep-core` is this repo's own workspace package and carries no
third-party obligation of its own.

### 4.2 Compiled into the site's browser bundle
`lingokeep.com` renders on the server, but its interactive parts are React
components, so Next ships their libraries to every visitor. Three of these are
**not** MIT — `lucide-react` and `next-auth` are ISC, `class-variance-authority`
is Apache 2.0 — and §6 carries those texts for that reason.

`ts-fsrs` is here as well as in §4.1 because the review schedule is computed in
the browser on **both** surfaces. The TanStack / react-hook-form / jotai /
date-fns group arrives through `@jun/site-kit`'s account and admin surfaces
rather than through this repo's own imports; it ships to the browser all the
same, which is the only test that matters here.

## 5. What is deliberately not here
Server-side use is not distribution, so packages that never leave our machines
carry no notice obligation. Named here so that the *absence* is a decision
rather than an oversight:
- **`next-mdx-remote` (MPL-2.0)** — imported only as `next-mdx-remote/rsc`, which
compiles blog MDX during the server render. If it ever moves to a client
component, MPL-2.0's source-availability condition applies and it belongs in
§4.2.
- **`@vercel/speed-insights` (Apache-2.0)** — rendered only when `process.env.VERCEL`
is set, and this app deploys to our own Kubernetes cluster. It ships to nobody.
- `drizzle-orm`, `postgres`, `stripe`, `pino`, `@anthropic-ai/sdk` and the rest of
the server-only tree, which exist solely inside a private container image.
- `kuromoji` is the one exception listed anyway, in §1.4, because its output is
user-facing.
Video material used in product screenshots is a separate obligation with its own
public page: **`/credits`** (CC BY 3.0, attribution per video). It is not merged
into this file because the two have different lifecycles — that list changes when
a screenshot is retaken.
YouTube is a trademark of Google LLC. LingoKeep is not affiliated with,
endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google. The extension renders subtitles
in the user's own browser and never modifies YouTube's servers or content; video
content seen through it belongs to its creators.
